Material Selection

Guide to plastic characteristics and which is best suited for your plastic extrusion

For customers needing more information into available materials and which methods of processing is being used such as injection molded grades vs extrusion grades please click on this link: https://ulprospector.com

For customers  unsure about which material will be suitable for their project, SRG can run multiple die tests until the correct material reaches the customers specific requirements. In some cases die modifications will suffice and in other cases new dies may be required depending on the type of material being selected.

ABS  economical engineering grade used in consumer electronics. Exhibits rigidity, good impact strength and hardness with chemical resistance.

Acrylic  high clarity rigid used in retail displays, light lenses and window glazing. Comes in translucent and opaque colors. Also known as Plexiglas.

PETG  similar to acrylic in appearance with better impact resistance. Cann be cold formed without fracturing. High clarity and like acrylic used for displays and lenses.

Polycarbonate  high clarity with excellent impact resistance. Comes in clear and colors, has high temperature resistance. Used for windshields, known as Lexan.

Polyethylene  LDPE  high impact resistance, low tensile strength, good moisture resistance and used in traffic barriers and safety cones.

Polyethylene  HDPE  harder and stiffer than LDPE with good temperature and weather resistance. Safe for food storage, water drinking containers.

PVC  rigid, semi-rigid and flexible with good weather and UV resistance. non flammable with hight corrosion resistance, good tensile and impact strength.

Styrene  economical crystal clear material used in displays. Low impact resistance. Comes in clear and colors. Also used for flat lenses in overhead light fixtures.

TPR  plastic alternative to rubber, comes in several durometers. Good tensile strength and chemical resistance. Used for automotive trim and mouldings.

Urethane  comes in soft to hard grades has good tensile and tear strength with excellent impact resistance. Used for automotive bumpers and cladding.
